How to write a company mission statement (and whether you need one)
We read 13 company pages: 6 publish a mission, 6 state none. What a mission statement is, how long it should be, and how to write one.
A company mission statement is one short sentence on why your company exists. You do not have to publish one. On November 1, 2026, we read the About or company page of 13 companies in our Index. Six label a mission, one labels a purpose, and six state no mission at all and simply say what they do.
| States a 'mission' | 6 |
|---|---|
| States a 'purpose' | 1 |
| No mission, leads with product | 6 |
Half of the companies we read publish a labeled mission; the other half just say what they do.

What is a mission statement?
A mission statement answers one question: why does the company exist? Nielsen Norman Group, a user-research firm, found that a visitor moving through a site “should gain a fuller understanding of who you are, what you do, and why you exist”. That last part, the why, is the mission. The US Small Business Administration places it in the executive summary of a business plan, where a founder is asked to “include your mission statement” alongside “what your company is and why it will be successful”.
The strongest ones are plain and short. Coursera states “a mission to provide universal access to world-class learning”. Wise runs its page under the heading Our mission and sums it up as “money without borders”. Hugging Face says it is “on a mission to democratize good machine learning”. None of them needs a second sentence.
Do you need a mission statement?
No. Six of the 13 companies we read publish no mission and open with what they do instead. Stripe, Shopify and Figma all lead with the product and never label a mission. That is a fair choice. A mission earns its place when the company’s work is a cause, such as Headspace, whose page states a mission to “provide every person access to lifelong mental health support”. A company whose value is the product itself often does better to say what the product is first.
The question to ask is whether a sentence about why you exist would tell a visitor something the product line does not already say. If it would, write one. If it would only repeat what you do, lead with what you do.
Mission, vision, or purpose: what is the difference?
The labels drift from company to company. A mission says why you exist now. A vision describes the future you are working toward. A purpose is often used for the same idea as a mission. In our reading, 1Password labels its statement a purpose, “to build a safer, simpler digital future for everyone”, and Todoist publishes both a mission and a separate vision. Pick one label, define it for your own company, and use it the same way everywhere.
How long should a mission statement be?
Short. The missions we read ran from three words to about sixteen, and most sat under ten.
| Company | Mission | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Wise | Money without borders | 3 |
| Coursera | Universal access to world-class learning | 6 |
| Todoist | Empowering humanity with simple yet powerful productivity tools | 8 |
| Headspace | Provide every person access to lifelong mental health support | 9 |
A mission statement that runs past one sentence is usually two ideas that want separating: the mission and the vision, or the mission and the product. Keep the mission to the single sentence a reader can repeat.
What makes a good mission statement?
Three things, drawn from the ones that read well:
- Plain words. No superlatives a reader cannot picture. “The best” and “world-class service” say nothing a competitor could not also claim.
- A real subject and verb. Say what you do and for whom. Coursera provides access to learning. Wise moves money. Each names an action and a beneficiary.
- One idea. A mission with an “and” in the middle is often a mission and a vision. Split them.
How to write yours
Fill one sentence and stop:
We help [who] [do what] so that [why it matters].
Then cut it down. Drop “so that” if the why is obvious from the verb. Drop the adjectives. Read it aloud. If a stranger can repeat it back after hearing it once, it is done. If they cannot, it is probably two ideas crammed into one line, so split them.
Add your company to the Index
Once you can say in one line what your company does and why it exists, you can add it to TheCompanyIndex for free. A person reads every entry before it goes live, and an approved entry gets its own page with a followed link. The Index lists what a company does first, so a clear mission makes an entry easier to approve.
What this page could not check
- The 13 companies are mostly software and consumer-tech firms in our Index. A nonprofit, a hospital or a school leans far more on a mission, so the even split here would not carry over to them.
- Whether a page states an explicit mission is our reading of its labels and headings. Mission, purpose and vision are not used the same way across companies.
- Some pages served us a localized version, so Stripe and Mailchimp answered in German. We judged the labeled statement, not the translation.
- Companies rewrite these statements, and the Index grows, so the shares will shift over time.
- Each finding is due for a check after May 1, 2027.

Questions
What is a mission statement?
One short sentence on why a company exists. Nielsen Norman Group found that a visitor should quickly learn who you are, what you do, and why you exist, and the SBA places a mission statement in a business plan's executive summary, beside what the company is and why it will succeed.
Do I need a mission statement?
No. Of the 13 companies we read in our Index, 6 publish no mission and open with what they do, including Stripe, Shopify and Figma. A mission helps a company whose work is a cause; a product company can lead with the product.
How long should a mission statement be?
Short. The missions we read ran from 3 words (Wise, money without borders) to about 16 (Typeform), and most were under 10. One clear sentence is the target.
What is the difference between a mission and a vision statement?
A mission says why you exist now. A vision describes the future you are working toward. Companies use the labels loosely: 1Password calls its statement a purpose, and Todoist publishes both a mission and a vision.
What makes a good mission statement?
Plain words, a real subject, and no vague superlatives. It should say what you do and for whom. Coursera's mission to provide universal access to world-class learning works because every word is concrete.
